Huge buffalo head adorns the entrance to a traditional Torajan Tongkonan. A Tongkonan in Toraja culture is the residential house, the word tongkon (to sit) literally means a place where family members meet. These unique houses are a joy to behold being built from natural materials, ornately decorated with symbolic motifs and usually fronted by a Buffalo head or Column of Buffalo horns which are somewhat of a status symbol because the horns are souvenirs from the many ceremonies which are held in Toraja culture. Usually more horns denote a certain degree of wealth.
