Water and boats go hand in hand with Borneo as can be seen in this image of speedboats and a floating mosque on stilts in Balikpapan bay in East Kalimantan, Indonesian Borneo. Borneo is the second largest island in the world known particular for its abundant rainforest, flora and fauna, rivers and ethnic minorities. At every turn one can see a wide variety of boats. Modern fibreglass types such as the speedboats and many other traditional types which use Bornean hardwood such as Kayu Ulin (Bornean Ironwood). This is also used as the structural material for the floating mosque. Bornean Hardwood is ideal for long lasting boats which transport people and merchandise throughout the many waterways that make this fascinating island a tourist destination which still remains somewhat off the beaten track and a great getaway for adventure tourism.
