Stock Photo Description
Stock photo landscape image of Gunung Marapi dormant volcano of Sumatra with an elevation of 2,891 m (9,485 ft) framed by trees. Not to be confused with Gunung Merapi in Java which happens to be dangerously active and much more unpredictable than the sleeping giant of Gunung Marapi. Mount Marapi overlooks the tourist area and travel destination of Bukitinggi in West Sumatra. Excellent views are to be had from many view points that look out to the famous Sianok Canyon of Bukittinggi. The mountain itself is of cultural significance to the Indigenous Minangkabau people. Legend has it that Gunung Marapi was the site first settled by the Minangkabau people after their ship landed on the mountain when it was merely the size of an egg and surrounded by water long long ago!
