Very common and widespread throughout Britain and Europe too and North America. The honey mushroom or honey fungus is a parasitic mushroom which thrives on rotting wood. Armillaria mellea is widely considered as an edible mushroom in the past although there have been a few fatalities in modern times which has change this. Again if properly prepared they should be ok but some people may have an adverse reaction which is what the fatalities have pointed to in the past.
