From late summer through Autumn these mushrooms in the mountain woodlands of Japan grow in abundance with the optimal growing conditions and substrate from which the spores can germinate from. Pholiota limonella is known as a saprobe or a saprobic fungi which means it prefers to grow on living trees rather than dead wood which is characteristic of many of this genus of wild fungi species.
